Article: Prevention Is Power

October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and in recognition of this important initiative we’re sharing a list of top prevention tips to help you stay empowered and healthy, all year long.

Breast Cancer affects women of all ages, races and backgrounds. Men can also suffer from the disease, although this occurrence is very rare when compared to the rate of diagnosis in women. Breast cancer is the most common form of cancer among women worldwide with 1 in 8 women expected to develop the disease during her lifetime, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). Although there are some contributing factors which are beyond personal control, such as family history and genetic predisposition, there are a number of simple yet effective practices that can help reduce your risk of the disease.

Take Action to Help Lower your Risk with these Practical Tips:

1. Perform Monthly Self-Breast Exams.

The power is in your hands, literally! Ask your doctor to demonstrate the proper process or find a trusted online resource to explain the steps of a self-exam. It’s also important to get familiar with how your breasts normally look and feel so that you’ll be aware if anything changes which may require attention. If possible, get your partner involved in the process so they can help detect areas you might miss.

2. Learn your Family History.

Broaching this subject with family may be difficult or awkward but it is important to remember that the info learned from these vital conversations could save your life. Depending on your family history and genetic predisposition, your doctor might recommend a different, more frequent screening schedule or approach.

3. Incorporate Regular Exercise into your Routine.

According to Cancer.org, many studies conducted over the past 20 years have consistently shown that an increase in physical activity is linked to a lower breast cancer risk. Need a little inspiration to up your fitness routine and get those steps in? Schedule weekly sweat sessions with a pal. Working out with a friend or group is a proven way to keep yourself accountable and help push you harder. There are also plenty of free fitness tools and apps which are a great way to track your progress and keep you motivated! And of course, a new workout outfit always helps to boost your confidence and spark that fitness fire within (good thing you’ve come to the right place)!

4. Maintain Regular Screenings.

Early detection is key in conquering breast cancer. Talk to your doctor about a screening schedule that’s right for you. There are a variety of different techniques and tools available from mammograms to 3D imaging and more depending on your personal needs and breast composition etc. Coordinate your screening appointment with a friend to serve as an added reminder of the date and source of support.

5. Be a Force for Change.

Learn the facts and share them with your friends and family. Knowledge is power and together, we can take steps to diminish breast cancer. You can also volunteer your time at local breast cancer awareness events and fundraisers all year round and take the opportunity to seek out and support retailors that participate in Breast Cancer Awareness Month by donating a portion of proceeds to breast cancer foundations during the month of October, or make a direct donation to a reputable foundation of your choice.
