Holiday Wellness Tips

‘Tis the season to overindulge!

We get it: at the end of the year, you want to cut loose by getting seconds or thirds and having one more drink because why not? You’ve earned it. Go ahead; no judgment here. While you’re living it up, take a moment to maintain the progress you’ve made.

We’ve got tips to help you do just that below:

1. Get a Move On

With a deluge of delectable delights coming your way, staying active and moving around will be essential to burning off those calories. If you don't fancy a full workout, try to stay active when you can:

  • Forego the elevator and take the stairs.
  • Park farther away.
  • Set a reminder on your phone to move around for 10 minutes after every hour you remain seated.

2. Stick to a Routine (as much as possible)

The holiday season might be the only time you spend with many of your family and friends and should be savoured accordingly. But having a great time with your nearest and dearest means sticking to your previous routine can become a challenge. The key is to do what you can when you can and maintain consistency as much as possible. You’ll be glad you did when it’s time to get back to ‘real life’ in early January.

3. Drink Plenty of Water

We don’t want to say this is a no-brainer, but you should always maintain a healthy water intake. Keep it up during the holidays.

4. Be Realistic

Understand that it’s the holidays and you should enjoy them with friends and family. Don’t be overly demanding or strict on yourself; indulge responsibly while trying to partake of healthier eats when you can. Just be sure not to let a cheat day or two turn into a cheat week.

5. Prioritize Sleep

Although many of us don’t get as much of it as we’d like, sleep is integral to staying fit and healthy. You already know all about ideal temperatures, limiting screen time beforehand, and avoiding food or drink; no need to rehash that here. As part of maintaining a routine (see point 2), we encourage you to try to go to bed and wake up as consistently as possible. But if you want to sleep in once or twice, go ahead; it’s been a long year, and we could all use a break.

Don’t beat yourself up when January rolls around and you discover you’ve fallen behind in your fitness goals. Refocus your efforts, return to your previous schedule, resume your regular diet, and stay positive. You’ve got this.
